Castle Klevenow lies about one kilometer south of the highway A20 exit “Grimmen-Ost”. It is part of the community of Suederholz<\/a>. The small city of Grimmen<\/a> is 4 kilometers away, and offers a large choice of grocery shops, along with several other attractions. The very attractive hanseatic league cities of Stralsund<\/a> and Greifswald<\/a> are a 20 minute car drive away. It’s about a two hour drive to Hamburg or Berlin.<\/p>\n There are many tourist attractions and excursion destinations in the area. The old town of Stralsund is a UNESCO world heritage site, and Greifswald is not less beautiful. There are many gothic brick buildings and churches, as gothic brick architecture is typical of the area. Varied shopping opportunities, cosy restaurants and cafes, an active and varied night life, a well developed harbour (including ship building<\/a>) and a wide range water sport oppurtunities are offered.<\/p>\n Some of the most popular German ocean islands are a 25 to 45 minute drive from Klevenow. The most visited island in Germany is Ruegen<\/a>, which is right accross from Stralsund. Ruegen is large and the landscape is quite varied; chalk cliffs, fine sand beaches, castles, tree lined roads, well modernised old bathing towns (like Binz<\/a>) are just some of the attractions. Hiddensee<\/a> is next to Ruegen, and can be reached by boat from Stralsund or Ruegen. Hiddensee is a car-free island, which can be explored by foot or by bike. Hiddensee is the sunniest place in Germany! Darss\/Zingst<\/a> has a 60 km long white powder sand beach, which blends into sand dunes and pine tree forests as you go inland. Many residents in the area feel that these beaches are amongst the best to be found anywhere. Usedom<\/a> is also a beautiful island, and was the traditinoal holiday island of the residents of Berlin in the 1930’s. The “three Kaiser bath towns<\/a>” are well known for their architechture from the times when Germany was ruled by a Kaiser (1871 until 1918).<\/p>\n The traditional business in the area is tourism and agriculture, which accounts for the clean air and environment. Many otherwise rare birds, such as storks or eagles, are to be found in the area.<\/p>\n The University of Greifswald<\/a> is a 20 minute drive away, as is the Stralsund University of Applied Sciences<\/a>. The University of Greifwald is one of the oldest universities in Germany, having being founded in 1456 (less than 100 years after Castle Klevenow was built!).
